Zero-energy buildings – buildings that produce as much energy as they consume – represent the cutting edge of environmentally responsible construction. These buildings, which require state-of-the-art energy-efficient construction and renewable energy systems such as solar and wind, are challenging to design and build but can offer comfort and amenities while reducing the building’s impact on the environment.
To help spur the market for zero energy buildings in the Northeast, the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA) has developed the ZERO-Energy Building Award to recognize net-zero-energy buildings designed for the unique northeast climate. As an incentive for design/build teams, NESEA will offer a $10,000 cash prize for the best building in the Northeast that can document net-zero energy use while offering a high level of comfort, affordability and reliability.
To be eligible for the award, buildings must be occupied and document net-zero energy use for one year. The competition is open to occupied buildings in the Northeast—the six New England states plus New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. Winners will be announced at the Building Energy Conference and Trade Show in March, every year.
Entries will be judged by a panel of distinguished experts in the fields of green building and renewable energy. Judges will include Larry Sherwood of Sherwood Associates, past Executive Director of NESEA and ASES; Michael H. Nicklas, FAIA, Principal Innovative Design, Inc.; and Ron Judkof, Director of Buildings & Thermal Systems Centers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
Entries are due on January 15.
First, the building must meet our annual net-zero energy requirements. Second, the entry will be judged on the basis of several design attributes, including services, comfort and cost that make the building a model for present and future markets.
